Fall 2001 Elsie Davies Memorial Scholarship
-By Dawn Woodcox '01
The recipients of the 2001 Elsie Davies Memorial Scholarship are actives Lisa Hudy and Beth Spencer.
Lisa Hudy is a junior chemical engineering major. She came to CWRU from Edinboro, PA, and has held a variety of offices. Most recently, she served as the chapter president for the Fall semester of the 2001-2002 school year. During the spring of her sophomore year, she served as Vice President. As VP, she gave the weekly executive board meetings some much-needed organization.
Beth Spencer, also a junior, is a Maine native who currently lives in Erie, PA. With majors in English and Political Science, she has held a wide variety of offices- from Philanthropy Chair to Officer Committee Chair to Pledge Educator. During her term as Philanthropy Chair, she introduced the chapter to the Brig Niagra- a historic tall ship from the war of 1812, which she volunteers on. During the winter, crews work to maintain and preserve the boat, which is sailed during the summer.
Lisa and Beth will have their names added to a plaque that is currently in the works. When the alumnae board has the plaque completed, it will ist each year's recipient(s) of the scholarship.
The scholarship, formerly known as the Sigma Psi Alumnae Board Rent Scholarship, is awarded every fall to one or two actives that go above and beyond what is expected of the sisters. Applications are distributed in the spring, and the alumnae board makes their decision over the summer. Quite a few applications were received this year, making the decision process very difficult. The alumnae board wishes to congratulate all of the sisters who applied on their outstanding achievements.

CELEBRATING 105 YEARS OF SIGMA PSI
-By Marie Vanaman '99
On Saturday, March 2, 2002, Sigma Psi will be celebrating it's 105th year with the Daffodil Ball- a combined active & alumnae formal dinner and dance at A Touch of Elegance in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
The night will begin at 6:30 and will go to 12:30 a.m. There will be a buffet dinner followed by dancing and, of course, lots of socializing. There will also be a cash bar. For everyone's convenience, there will be valet parking and a coat check. The cost of the chicken dinner is $25 a person. Vegetarian entree will be available on an individual basis for an extra $2.
In addition to the dance, a brunch has been planned for Sunday morning at the sorority house at 11 a.m. This will be an opportunity for some more socializing before those from out-of-town need to take off for home. The cost is $3 a person to cover the food.
The Alumnae Board hopes that you will take this opportunity to join fellow alumnae and actives in an event which we hope to become a every 5-year tradition.
The most up-to-date information on both activities as well as any updates can be found on the Sigma Psi website. The website also has a list of attractions in the Cleveland area.
To help reduce the costs for those who do not live in the area, a message board has been set up on the Sigma Psi website for local alumnae to offer up housing for any out-of-towners, so that they do not have to stay in a hotel if they do not want to. Arrangements can then be made between individual alumnae.
If you prefer a hotel, arrangements have been made with Super 8 in Beachwood, which is about 10 miles from the dance & the sorority. A discounted rate of $49 + tax has been arranged for a room with two queen sized beds. Reservations can be made by calling 216-831-7200 or 1-800-800-8000. Please indicate that you are with the Sigma Psi Alumnae. Reservations need to be made by two weeks in advance (February 16) for this special rate.
To register, please follow the link on the website for the dance information.
If you have any questions or need more information, please e-mail me and I will be happy to answer your questions, or find you an answer if I don't know.

Tidbits
Paula Willey '87 writes about the best pledge prank- when she and the other pledges stole ALL the toilet seats from the house during a party... and adds that 2/3 of the pledges were on crutches. It was Janet Ahearn, Alexis (Brenda) Garlick, and Paula Willey. There were seven bathrooms in that house, and some of the bolts were practically rusted shut. The pledges got the toilet seats out of the house despite the crowded party by dropping them out of the widows to their accomplice (Pierre Khovry '86) below.
Andrea Seigla Fivush '95 tells about being in charge every year of banner making for Greek Week. She made a fantastic banner with a Greek/Roman theme with partially naked men with fig leaves over important parts. Everybody loved it! But the judges disqualified it for the nakedness. The actives then hung the banner in front of the Sigma Psi house and some drunk Delts shredded it to bits that night and they were heartbroken. The next year she made a banner with a picnic basket and ants eating Greek food. It won that year! The trophy should still be on the Sig's mantlepiece.
In the spring issue of the Alumnae Link, there was a question about the supposed Delt house fire on the law school library lawn and how Sigma Psi lost items in the fire. It was questioned whether there was confusion, and maybe that this fire that Sigma Psi lost stuff in was really the Adelbert fire. Leslie DiBona Moder '92 says, however, that the Adelbert fire was in the early 1990's and that the Delt fire story existed before that. Anyone else have any thoughts on whether the Delt story is true, and if so, when did it happen?

Sigma Psi is getting even more technically savvy! :-) In addition to the website, there is now a Sigma Psi Yahoo! group. This is a subscription only (therefore, Sig alums only) area where members can post messages, files, links, and even photos. It's a great way to keep in touch. If you haven't yet joined, please follow the Yahoo! group link on the Sigma Psi website. It may take a day or two, since I will need to be notified (through Yahoo!) of your request and then verify that you are an alumnae member. Please come be a part! You can elect to read the messages on the website, have them each individullay e-mailed to you as they are posted, or get a daily digest of any e-mails. We've already had some good discussions about Sigma Psi history (past messages can be found on the Yahoo! group website- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sigma_Psi) and also used the site to plan a Christmas get together.
