Sigma Psi Scholarship
Since the fall of 1996, the alumnae board has awarded a fall rent
scholarship to the actives. This fall, the award was split between
two actives- senior Sarah Born and junior Kelly Halacka.
Sarah is from Hingham, MA, a small suburb south of Boston. She is a
biochemistry maor with a biology minor. Sarah works at the Cleveland
Clinic doing immunology research for multiple sclerosis. She also works
for the Undergraduate Admissions office as an intern, where she interviews
perspective CWRU students and helps with programming. Sarah is currently
pledge mom and on the personnel board in Sigma Psi, and has held the offices
of Philanthropy Chair, Recording Scribe, Alumnae Relations, and President.
Sarah is in the process of applying to graduate schools. She hopes to go on to get her Ph.D. in immunology and work in the biotechnology
field, eventually teaching at the university level some day.
Kelly is from Bloomfield Hills, MI. She is studying Biomedical Engineering
and her minor is in English. Currently, she holds a position on Personnel
Board for Sigma Psi and past offices include Scholarship Chair and
co-Intramural Representative. As the Scholarship Chair, Kelly organized
all the files that had been accumulating in the scholarship room and
made the room usable for the sisters. Kelly is also active with the
Society of Women Engineers, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and
served on the board of her residence hall last year. She also studies
piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Kelly is not sure what she
will do in the future, but will most likely go on to graduate school
and then work in the industry.

Mr. CWRU
-By Beth Spencer '03
On November 4th,
the 22nd Mr. CWRU went from dream to successful reality. There were 11
contestants, each more impressive than the rest. Finalist Asim Haque,
from Hitchcock maintained a "ladies man" theme throughout the contest
offering flowers, "wine", and then condoms, only to have his escort,
active Beth Spencer, throw the wine in his face. During the talent portion
of the competition he received many laughs and delighted the audience
with a surprise visit from "Jonny Disco," last year's first runner up,
during his call-in show. TJ Salerno entered as Fred Flintstone, removed
at least 4 layers of swimsuits during beachwear, and caused the entire
audience to melt by lavaliering his escort and girlfriend active Wendy
Adkins during formalwear! Wayne Miller, from Phi Kappa Theta, also won
the audience's heart by singing a song to his mother (who was present
as it was Parent's Weekend).
The winners of this year's Mr. CWRU were:
Mr. Congeniality: Doug Oesterlin
Mr. Photogenic: TJ Salerno
Mr. Macho: Bill Darnieder
2nd runner-up: Wayne Miller
1st runner-up: TJ Salerno
Mr. CWRU: Bill Darnieder
The proceeds from this year's event went to the Children's Miracle
Network.

Piano for the Sorority House
-By Kelly Halacka '02
After trying hard for two semesters to obtain a piano for Sigma Psi, I
was finally able to find one through the help of one of our alumnae,
Ms. Marcia Snavely '58. Not only was Marcia able to help me find a
piano, but the piano was donated by a local community center, reducing
the costs substantially. The piano is a baby grand and is in good
condition- it has made its home in the lobby of our house. I arranged
for it to be tuned and it seems to be holding up fairly well. Many sisters
have commented on how pleasant it is to walk into the lobby to the sound
of a sister playing a tune.
Marcia and I are hoping to have a plaque made to put on the piano in
memory of alumna Susan Hansen (Fisher) '58 who recently passed away.
Like Marcia and I, she too shared a passion for music. I am also hoping
to arrange for a donation to be made on behalf of Sigma Psi to the community
center that donated the piano to us. The sisters of Sigma Psi want to
extend a warm thank you to Marcia for helping us obtain a piano for the
house. Stop by anytime to check it out - we would love to have you!

Fall Rush and Pledging
-By Cheryl Wozniak '00
For the second year, formal rush was held in the fall. There were four
parties this year. The first party was a jungle theme, with everyone
wearing letters made by one of the actives, using animal print fabric.
The second was a philanthropy party, something new to formal rush.
The actives and rushees decorated and filled bags for a local women's
shelter. The third centered around a night on the town and was highlighted
by a slide show of sisters, events, and places important to Sigma Psi.
Lastly, there was the winter wonderland party which ended with a ritual
similar to Fire & Ice.
Of the 11 girls (quota) from formal rush, 8 are currently in the pledge
program while the other 3 have deffered to the spring. In addition, two
ladies were given bids in informal rush- one pledged and the second deffered.
The pledges are the majority of the way through the pledge program,
and will participate in Sig Experience on December 9.

History Question
Question: Kay Print Janney '59 has a question for everyone- she
was wondering what has happened to Stunt Night. She writes, "That annual
musical theatre creation (Stunt Night), plus the guys' Greek Week show,
and, to a smaller extent the annual May Day event, were so positive and
important to us at the time." Kay, June Raufman Yanick '60, and their husbands
each agree that a whole lot of people skills, as well as musical and
theatrical skills, were honed during those three "major" events. She also
adds that while these events cut through Greek and other affiliations to
bring an entire class together, in the late '50s the SIG sisters were
strongly "in charge" of such events.
Answer: Part of the answer to Kay's question is that the Stunt
Night and May Day event are no longer held on campus. The Greek Week
skits still are, with both the fraternities and sororities participating.
If anyone could give extra insight into when the other two traditions
were set aside, Kay would appreciate it, and others would love to
hear all about it!

Susan G. Hansen, 63, made arts accessible
Plain Dealer
HUDSON - Susan G. Hansen, 63, executive director of the Case Barlow Farm Inc., collapsed with what appeared to be a heart attack and died at her home in Hudson Feb. 28. Autopsy results are pending.
Mrs. Hansen helped organize the 200 charter members of the citizens organization which raised money to buy the Case Barlow bicentennial farm for the purpose of creating a cultural and educational center. She envisioned using the barn, which is one of the most
photographed structures in Hudson, for summer concerts, theater events, art education and other activities.
Making the arts more accessible to the community was her mission for many years. Mrs. Hansen, who earned a master’s degree in fine arts management from the University of Akron in the late 1980s, helped start the Cleveland Orchestra’s Serendipity Sunday
family programs at Blossom Music Center and headed the Cleveland Ballet’s early education programs.
In 1988, she produced an educational television program called "Once Upon an Orchestra," featuring a group of mimes performing to the Akron Symphony’s rendition of Mathias Bamert’s composition. It won several awards, including an Emmy and the Sears
Award, according to Russell F. Hansen, her husband of 40 years.
Mrs. Hansen also developed a three-part film series titled "Meet an Orchestra Musician," which introduced elementary school students to symphony orchestras.
She was a founding member and past trustee of the Cleveland Opera. In the early 1990s, she was director of the Chagrin Valley Arts Center. She ran a small arts management services business called Arts Serve since 1986.
"She just wasn’t happy unless she was seeking the giant self in herself," her husband said. "She’s always had the interest in the arts and to do something of significance. And, by George, on a small scale, that’s just what she’s done."
Mrs. Hansen, whose given name was Suzanne Fisher, was born in York, PA, and grew up in the Pittsburgh area. She came to Cleveland in 1953 to attend Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University.
While studying in the college’s medical technology program, she volunteered at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. After graduating in 1958, she worked as a medical technologist at University Hospitals for a year before moving to East Lansing, MI, and
worked as a laboratory supervisor at Ingham County Hospital.
In 1962, Mrs. Hansen returned to Cleveland and took a position at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. Six years later, she moved to Hudson. She worked at the Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital from the late 1960s until the mid-1970s.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kristen Patterson of Beltsville, MD; sons, Russell C. of Malibu, CA, and Jason A. of Stow; her mother, Louise Smith of Sun City, AZ; three grandchildren; and two brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel at Western Reserve Academy, 115 College St., Hudson 44236.
Donations may be made to the Case Barlow Bicentennial Farm, in care of Russell Hansen, at the academy.
Arrangements are by the Johnson-Romito Funeral Home of Hudson.

‘50s...
Barbara Dale Collins ‘56 is presently working on the Woman 2000 and Women’s Center for CWRU.
Kay Print Janney ‘59 writes, "Although I formally retired as professor emeritus from the University of Connecticut in 1997, I am back, teaching persuasion and public speaking at least for another few semesters. My "protégé" took over my dramatic arts duties at UCONN and is doing a wonderful job, but the campus needed someone in communications and so... I love being back in the classroom!
Meanwhile, the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, for which I’ve been chair of the Board of Trustees since 1995, is burgeoning. Check out our website: http://www.sp.uconn.edu/~wwwsfa/bimp
After 30 years of annual Christmas letter updates, June Raufman Yanick ‘60 and her husband Joe (ADL ‘59) came from their retirement home in South Carolina to Groton for an overnight visit with us. It was great seeing them again, and ‘just like we’ve never been apart’, sharing memories as well as what is new in our lives. They are both very busy in retirement -- with musical groups, meals on wheels, June is painting ceramics, etc., etc. as well as traveling the world and the U.S. to spend time with their three children and four grandchildren. We promised to not let another 30 years go by until the next reunion."
‘60s...
June Yanick (Raufman) ‘60 says that she and her husband are having a wonderful time being retired and traveling in between the numerous volunteer activities that they’re involved in. They especially enjoy the Elderhostel program: continuing education for ‘seniors’ (must be over 55). Their favorite was at Brookgreen Gardens on coastal S.C.
June also writes that after visiting her daughter’s family in Summit, NJ (Feb. ‘00) on the occasion of their grandchild’s christening, she and her husband Joe drove to Groton, CT to visit Sig sister Kay Print Janney ‘59 and her husband Fred. They had no trouble picking up the conversation from 38 years ago- the last time they saw them!
Bobbie Messick (Tanner) ‘62 says that she and her husband Ed will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in November. Bobbie is also considering "real" retirement and a move to the west. She would love to hear from other Sigs who ski and/or live in the mountains.
Margaret (Maggie) Case (Ginthner) ‘63 is recovering from a hip replacement. Her husband, David, retired in January and she retired in June. Maggie still hears regularly from Martha Powers (Wolfram) ‘63 and gets e-mails from Julie Ostrander (Rippl) ‘63.

Louise Lobertini (Spanos) ‘79 sends greetings to Mary Ann ("How is Karen? Please call sometime") and to Wak. She also writes that both of her kids are in high
school with her now; Matt’s a junior and Sara is a freshman. And "of course, Mr. F (Fido) is still part of our family!"
80s...
Deborah Smith ‘81 "retired" from the operating room in May of 1999 after 18 years of doing anesthesia and is now a self-employed massage therapist with a small private practice. She also works two days a week at the Open House, a local AIDS service
organization providing massage to clients in the HIV spectrum. The most exciting news is
that, after a long struggle with infertility, she and her partner, Keli Zehnder had their first child in August.
Susan Nedorost (Todd) ‘84 has a new job as Assistant Professor of Dermatology at CWRU and is the Director of Contact Dermatitis at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
After a summer of reflection, biking, and sun tanning, Lauren Ann Kostas ‘85 started a new career with a management consulting firm in downtown Chicago. She works with corporations to help them improve employee productivity through better communication. She loves her new job and has Aida Tanaka (Saracevic) ‘86 to thank. She was instrumental in getting her an interview with a name partner in the firm. Lauren’s free time, such as it is, is taken up by the local music scene, being a groovy aunt to her three nephews in Chicago, and reading those works of classic literature that she never finished in college.
Lisa Sweeney ‘88 writes that her job is the impetus for their move to Dayton. She and her husband William Sangrey are looking forward to being homeowners again and she says that she will split work time between the office and her home office. Lisa looks forward to lunches with her son David (born 8/19/99).
Vanessa Tinsley (Valena) ‘89 and family are currently building a new house in Chapel Hill. They are planning to have it finished in December. Vanessa is also still trying to finish her Ph.D.!
In June, Vanessa and Chris Wolowic (Reiss) ‘89 flew to Wisconsin to meet up with Kim Ellefson (Breault) ‘88 and Beth Berger (Preston) ‘88. They had a great weekend together and enjoyed catching up with each other and trying to pool together what news they had of other Sigs. In July, Vanessa also visited Kathy Klinich (DeSantis), who was a Psi Lambda, in Ann Arbor, MI. She and her husband, George (Sigma Chi, CIT ‘89) have an adorable 20-month
old son, Drew.
‘90s...
Upon finishing her fifth year of teaching at the Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Kimberley Aubin (Dareing) ‘91 and her husband relocated back to the Atlanta area from Chagrin Falls over the summer. They went from a hundred and fifty year old century home in the village to a brand new home. It’s great to be back in the sunny south!
Kim and her husband also had their first child, see births, above.
Kim would also like to congratulate her big sister, Sue Kwak ‘90 on her marriage to Kim’s cousin Jared Northrop. The two were introduced at Kim’s wedding back in August of ‘98.
In May, Laura Opincar (Monette) ‘92 received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Butler University in Indianapolis. She will be completing a one year residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis starting this past July. Laura also adds, "Maybe I’m finally done being a student. Nearing 30, so I sure hope so!"
Melissa Cardon (McNichols) ‘94 is still working on her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior at Columbia University, but expects to graduate in May, 2001. Her husband, Jim (Sarge from ZBT), works for Cisco Systems and is finishing his masters at NYU. Melissa and Jim have two sons -- Shamus, almost 4 years old, and Dominick, 1 year old. Melissa also has a website with her personal and professional life on display at http://www.columbia.edu/~msc53
Suzanne Carpenter ‘96 is really enjoying travel nursing. She spent last fall in Connecticut, the winter in Las Vegas, and the summer in Santa Barbara.
Alison Nishi ‘98 finally found a job that she likes!! She’s working for an independent record label in Denver called Believe Productions. Alison started in April and by June was promoted to National Sales Manager. The company produces compilation CDs to raise money for music education with Sony artists, and then forms corporate partnerships to get the participating schools music, instruments, uniforms, travel packages, etc. at discounts. They’re setting up a foundation for scholarships and more. It’s a lot of fun.
Rebecca Lovejoy ‘99 is currently working at ABB Automation in Wickliffe, OH. She is still doing Muay Thai kickboxing, and for the past year, has been bellydancing. Her first performance was in April.
Alycia Swanson '99 has moved out to the Toledo, OH area with her boyfriend Gabe.
He's going to be going to grad school at Bowling Green State University and getting a masters
in music composition. Alycia got a great job in a Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the Toledo
Hospital (she thinks it's the biggest hospital around there). Alycia says that it's a pretty
big change from the Cleveland Clinic and the Medical ICU where she used to work. But babies
are great and she feels that she's changed her energies toward a much more fruitful time of
life. They're very happy in Toledo, although there's not quite as many interesting things
to do there vs. Cleveland. They live in a very quiet family area- the dog loves to have a
backyard to play in!!
00s...
Cheryl Wozniak ‘00 recently got engaged to Chris Thompson, which a couple alumnae know from playing ultimate frisbee. They will be getting married on July 7, 2001. Cheryl also adds that Andrew will be 3 on 11/18 and will be the cutest little ringbearer. She is also going back to school at Case in January for her Masters (and hopefully Ph.D.) in Computer Science.
